Nanchang Insun International Cinema

Cinema Design Inspired by Books

The Nanchang Insun International Cinema, designed by Ajax Law & Virginia Lung, combines the elements of books and films to create a unique and captivating cinema experience.

The cinema, located in a Book City, draws inspiration from the correlation between books and films. While books are typically published with white backgrounds and black fonts, films use black frames to capture the essence of different actions. The designers have cleverly incorporated this contrast into their design, using a mix of white and black to create a visually striking space.

Upon entering the cinema, visitors are greeted by a sea of white. Pages of books flip along the walls, creating a mesmerizing effect. The ticketing office, made of corian, appears as stacks of 'paper' on the floor, adding to the illusion. As visitors move through the lobby into the hallway, the background transitions to a striking black. Words of different fonts and colors are scattered randomly against the black surface, forming famous dialogues from classical movies.

The corridor leads to the waiting room, where the sea of books continues. Two huge marble pillars resemble the spines of books, while green cylindrical spotlights hanging from the ceiling add a touch of nature. The black doors resemble black frames or black-dyed pages, with strips of light beams leaking through the gaps. The interlocking light beams and shadows create a mesmerizing pattern reminiscent of book pages.

The pattern of the carpet in the cinema resembles a gigantic bookshelf, further enhancing the ambiance of the space. The design seamlessly blends the worlds of books and films, creating a unique and immersive cinema experience.

The Nanchang Insun International Cinema covers an area of 7285sqm and was completed in July 2013 in Nanchang, China. The design team, consisting of Ajax Law and Virginia Lung, successfully achieved the client's objective of blending the concept of books into the cinema design.

This innovative design has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2014. The award acknowledges the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated in the design, as well as its strong technical characteristics and artistic skill.
